Swift Fuels’ 100R high-octane unleaded avgas cleared an ASTM production-spec vote on September 11, 2025, opening the door to broader market use.
On September 11, 2025, Swift Fuels announced that its 100R high-octane unleaded avgas passed a vote on the ASTM International production specification, a milestone that moves the fuel closer to mainstream distribution. The decision is a regulatory step that supports manufacturers, operators and suppliers working toward an alternative to legacy leaded aviation gasoline.
The 100R program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Lycoming, Continental, Rotax, Textron and Piper. Those partnerships aim to validate the fuel in real-world piston-engine use and secure approvals for more engines and airframes.
The ASTM production-spec vote is significant because it establishes a common manufacturing standard that fuel producers can follow. Swift Fuels says the step will help accelerate OEM and FAA evaluation processes, which are needed before broad operational approval and distribution in both the United States and European Union.
Swift Fuels reports 100R is already in active use at a total of ten flight schools—five in the U.S. and five across Europe—as part of testing and pilot programs. The company is coordinating with the FAA to expand engine and airframe approvals, aiming to fast-track the transition away from leaded avgas in general aviation.
For pilots, operators and flight schools, the ASTM vote is a practical step toward wider access to a high-octane unleaded option. The timeline for fleet-wide adoption will depend on continued OEM approvals, FAA airworthiness findings, and fuel production and distribution scaling.
