FAA air traffic control modernization kicks off as the agency seeks a Prime Integrator; industry responses are due September 21, 2025.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a formal process to select a Prime Integrator to develop a brand-new FAA air traffic control system for the United States. The agency used a Request for Solutions (RFS) to invite industry proposals, setting a submission deadline of September 21, 2025.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy framed the effort as strategically important for managing both commercial and military airspace, saying the upgrade will bolster safety and lay the groundwork for next-generation aviation technologies.
The RFS marks an early but decisive step in a broader modernization push. The FAA is aiming to replace aging infrastructure, improve operational resilience as traffic grows, and enable future capabilities such as advanced automation and better integration of unmanned systems. The agency is inviting systems integrators, technology firms, and industry partners to propose solutions that demonstrate technical, operational, and cybersecurity maturity.
The process is framed as competitive and collaborative: the FAA expects detailed proposals demonstrating how a Prime Integrator would manage system design, integration, testing, and long-term sustainment. While the RFS sets the deadline at September 21, 2025, further procurement steps and contract award timelines will follow as the agency evaluates submissions and engages stakeholders.
For U.S. aviation, the initiative aims to maintain competitiveness and operational readiness as air traffic volumes and mission complexity evolve; the selected integrator will play a central role in shaping the country’s next-generation air traffic control backbone.
