NATO has flown F-35A Lightning IIs into Poland to boost air policing and rapid-response readiness.
On October 2, 2025, a contingent of F-35A Lightning II fighters arrived at Łask Air Base as part of a NATO enhanced air policing mission. The deployment — involving U.S. Air Force (USAF) and Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) F-35s — is a short-term rotation to reinforce Baltic and Eastern European airspace security amid heightened regional tensions.
Aircraft types on site include the F-35A Lightning II, alongside Polish Air Force (PLAF) F-16s and MiG-29s for joint exercises. The operation is scheduled to run for several weeks and focuses on integrated patrols, interception drills, and tactical interoperability between NATO partners and Poland.
The deployment underscores NATO’s commitment to collective defense and rapid response: fifth-generation F-35A jets bring advanced sensors and networking to routine air policing. While the mission is defensive and temporary, it sends a clear signal about alliance readiness and the ability to surge capabilities into forward locations quickly.
Operational activities include joint sorties, airspace monitoring, and combined training to sharpen tactics and communications. NATO frequently rotates aircraft for enhanced air policing, but the presence of F-35As brings a higher level of sensor fusion and situational awareness to allied patrols.
Local commanders framed the move as routine deterrence and cooperation rather than escalation. Still, the timing—against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions—reinforces NATO’s posture in the Baltics and eastern flank. Expect updates from national air commands as the rotation progresses and exercises conclude.
