F-35A Contract: Lockheed $1.2B for Norway & Netherlands

Lockheed Martin has won a $1.2B F-35A contract to supply 12 jets to Norway and the Netherlands.

The Department of the Air Force announced on October 20, 2025, that Lockheed Martin will build 12 additional F-35A Lightning II fighters under a $1.2 billion award to support NATO partners. The F-35A contract covers procurement and related production work, with deliveries slated to begin in late 2027.

The aircraft will be integrated into the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) and the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). Both operators already fly earlier F-35A blocks and will use the new jets to modernize squadrons and maintain fifth-generation interoperability across NATO air defenses.

What this F-35A contract means for NATO partners

The F-35A Lightning II (conventional takeoff and landing variant) is central to NATO’s multirole and deterrence posture in Europe. Lockheed Martin will coordinate with the two defense ministries on logistics, pilot training and sustainment planning to ensure the aircraft arrive mission-ready and smoothly enter service.

  • Contract value: $1.2 billion for 12 F-35A Lightning II jets.
  • Announcement date: October 20, 2025 — deliveries begin late 2027.
  • Operators: Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) and Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF).

Officials say the procurement is part of broader modernization efforts across NATO as member states invest in fifth-generation capabilities. The award continues a steady cadence of F-35 purchases by European partners aiming to replace legacy fighters with aircraft that offer advanced sensors, stealth and networked operations.

Lockheed Martin will execute production in coordination with its global supply chain and with oversight from the U.S. Air Force. Beyond the airframes themselves, follow-on work typically includes spare parts, training systems and long-term sustainment contracts that extend the lifecycle support for the fleets.
