Air Serbia & airBaltic expand A220 wet lease deal

Air Serbia and airBaltic have agreed a two-year A220 wet lease that introduces up to four Airbus A220-300s to Air Serbia from 1 November 2025.

The wet-lease deal pairs Serbia’s flag carrier Air Serbia (IATA: JU, ICAO: ASL) with Latvia’s national airline airBaltic (IATA: BT, ICAO: BTI). Beginning 1 November 2025 and running through 2027, airBaltic will operate up to four A220-300s for Air Serbia during peak travel periods to help the carrier meet demand without adding permanent aircraft to its fleet.

What this A220 wet lease means

Under a wet lease (ACMI — Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance), airBaltic supplies the aircraft and crew while Air Serbia retains route control and ticketing. The A220-300 is a next-generation narrowbody that promises quieter cabins, improved fuel efficiency and better short-field performance compared with older single-aisle types.

The arrangement gives Air Serbia scheduling flexibility across its Balkan network and helps airBaltic — already one of Europe’s largest A220 operators — keep utilization high on its modern fleet. Operators are aiming to smooth seasonal peaks, reduce operational disruption and enhance passenger comfort on popular routes connecting the Baltic and Balkan regions.

  • Up to four Airbus A220-300 aircraft will operate for Air Serbia under the A220 wet lease.
  • Contract starts 1 November 2025 and runs through 2027.
  • Air Serbia (JU/ASL) gains short-term capacity without permanent fleet expansion; airBaltic (BT/BTI) leverages A220 experience.

Passengers flying with Air Serbia on wet-leased A220 services should expect the carrier’s branding and ticketing while the cabin products and crew will follow airBaltic operating procedures. For industry watchers, the deal is another sign that the A220 continues to be the preferred choice for carriers balancing efficiency, comfort and route flexibility in regional European markets.
