FAA warns airspace could be shut if the ATC staffing crisis worsens, raising the risk of major delays.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says nearly 50% of major U.S. air traffic control (ATC) facilities are operating with staffing shortages, increasing the risk of partial airspace closures and cascading flight delays. Transportation Secretary Duffy warned that some sectors could be closed to keep operations safe while controllers work without pay amid the ongoing government shutdown.
Facilities such as Denver Center (ZDV), which manages high‑altitude traffic across several states, are particularly vulnerable if more controllers call out. The FAA pointed to the potential for localized sector shutdowns — not wholesale national closures — but even short sector outages can ripple across the system and cause mass cancellations and long delays at hubs.
Airlines and passengers should expect proactive contingency steps. Carriers may ground departures, refile routes, or hold aircraft on the ground to avoid bottlenecks. ATC staffing shortfalls strain operations because controllers manage airspace capacity, traffic sequencing and separation standards that keep flights safe at cruise altitudes and during climbs and descents.
For travelers, the best actions are to monitor airline notifications, sign up for flight alerts, and allow extra time for connections. If you have essential travel, contact your carrier for rebooking options; flexible fares and standby choices will likely be in higher demand during disruption.
