Norway F-35 Order: 12 More F-35A Jets

Norway F-35 order: the US Department of Defense approved a $1.2 billion sale for 12 additional F-35A Lightning II fighters to the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

The contract, announced on September 20, 2025, names Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor and covers 12 F-35A Lightning II aircraft, engines, support equipment and pilot training. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027, and the purchase raises Norway’s total F-35 fleet to 64 jets.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force has already deployed F-35s for Baltic Air Policing and taken part in Arctic exercises with allied forces; this order strengthens NATO’s northern air defence posture while expanding Norway’s tactical and strategic options.

What the Norway F-35 order delivers

The $1.2 billion package includes aircraft airframes and propulsion, plus ground support systems and formal pilot training. Officials said the deal is intended to sustain squadron readiness and interoperability with NATO partners operating the F-35A variant.

Operationally, adding 12 jets will help Norway distribute readiness across bases and missions in the High North, while reinforcing contributions to allied air policing and joint Arctic exercises. The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant of the Lightning II family, commonly used by NATO air forces.

Lockheed Martin will perform production and delivery under US Department of Defense oversight; Norway will phase the new aircraft into service as deliveries arrive from 2027. The order is one element of Norway’s longer-term fleet planning for fifth-generation capabilities.
