Southwest 737 MAX 8 debuts a redesigned cabin with RECARO seats, extra legroom and power at every seat.
Southwest Airlines (IATA: WN, ICAO: SWA) has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 registered N8972S, featuring a refreshed interior aimed at boosting passenger comfort and operational flexibility. The carrier plans to put the aircraft into scheduled service on October 16, 2025.
The new cabin introduces factory-fitted RECARO seats with ergonomic shaping and multi-adjustable headrests, plus more generous legroom in selected rows. Overhead bin capacity has been increased to simplify carry-on stowage, and in-seat power outlets are available at every seat — a clear nod to travellers who work or stream inflight.
Southwest describes the arrival of N8972S as the first step in a broader fleet upgrade. Additional retrofit work is planned to roll out more onboard power ports and storage enhancements across other Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft in the airline’s pipeline, with the aim of standardising the passenger experience.
For passengers, the changes should translate to a more comfortable short-to-medium-haul experience and fewer bottlenecks at the gate. For Southwest, the upgrades aim to improve turnaround efficiency and reduce delays caused by cabin stowage issues.
While technical details such as seating layout counts and retrofit timetables were not disclosed, the move signals Southwest’s continued investment in its MAX fleet interior as it brings newer deliveries into service.
